DOC is a document format: it stores formatted text in a binary compound-document structure, requiring Microsoft Word or a compatible reader to render correctly. PSD is a image format that preserves non-destructive editing layers, masks, adjustment layers, and smart objects in a proprietary Adobe format. This renders each page as a raster image, making the content viewable without a document reader. Each page is rendered at the specified DPI and saved as a separate image; text in the output is no longer selectable.
