The High Efficiency Image Container format applies H.265 (HEVC) intra-frame compression achieving roughly twice the efficiency of JPEG at equal visual quality, used natively by Apple devices. Converting to JPEG produces a image file that uses lossy DCT compression that permanently discards fine pixel detail to achieve small file sizes, ideal for photographs.
