WMV is a video format: it stores video encoded with the proprietary VC-1 or WMV codec in a Microsoft ASF container, primarily a Windows ecosystem format. WMA is a audio format that encodes audio with Microsoft's proprietary WMA codec, primarily found in files created by Windows Media Player. This extracts the audio stream from the video container, discarding the video track. The audio track is decoded and re-encoded (or stream-copied if the codec matches) while the video frames are discarded.
