Converting HEIC to PNG produces a lossless raster image compatible with every image editor and operating system, removing the Apple-specific format dependency. HEIC uses H.265 (HEVC) intra-frame compression, which achieves about twice the efficiency of JPEG at equivalent visual quality but is not natively readable on Windows without a codec pack or on most non-Apple devices. PNG uses lossless DEFLATE compression and a universal alpha-transparency channel, giving pixel-accurate output that can be opened in any browser, image editor, or operating system. The conversion decodes the HEVC-compressed image data and re-encodes it to PNG. Any alpha transparency present in the HEIC file is preserved in the PNG output. Wide-gamut colour profiles (such as Display P3 from iPhone cameras) are either embedded in the PNG ICC profile or converted to sRGB depending on the selected output option. 1converter uses ImageMagick with HEVC decode support for this conversion.
